All birds at various stages of their lifecycle need calcium to live and function properly. Calcium in combination with phosphorus and vitamin D3 is essential for bone formation and skeletal development. In breeding birds calcium is essential for eggshell formation. Calcium is also involved in a number of other key metabolic pathways such as the blood clotting mechanism, with sodium and potassium for the normal beating of the heart and acid-base balance and for normal muscle function (contraction). In particular, for birds under high energy demands, such as during endurance flying, also require a ready source of calcium for proper muscular function.
Glucose is the essential nutrient that provides energy to all cells in the body. During digestion of food ingredients, such as grains and nectar (carbohydrates), by enzymes in the digestion tract of the bird, glucose is released, absorbed and made available to the bird’s cells to drive the metabolic pathways of the body. Glucose levels in the blood are much higher in birds than mammals and the level is regulated to maintain a constant level and is much less variable than in mammals. Glycogen is the stored form of glucose in the bird’s body and is highly available for exercise.
Glycogen is stored in the liver, kidney and skeletal muscle of the body. During and after strenuous and prolonged exercise glycogen is significantly depleted. Replenishment of this source of glucose and energy to the body cells is important to ensure the cells do not become energy deficient resulting in a breakdown in the metabolism of the bird and the onset of fatigue. During periods of high physical activity both glucose and calcium play an important role in muscle function.

CALCIPLUS™ is only recommended for high energy demands and stressful conditions, not for routine daily use.
This product is best fed separately just prior to and just after racing or prior to or
after periods of high physical activity, in a separate dish. It is NOT recommended
for routine every day general on-going use.
For everyday on-going use, use Tummyrite for Pigeons™ in combination
with CalciRite™ or just feed Tummyrite™ Plus for pigeons (which
already contains calcium and electrolytes) with CalciRite™ is best.
CALCIPLUS™ is a composite product of a fine limestone calcium grit providing a
good bioavailable source of calcium for all birds, calcium gluconate which provides
an immediate ready source of calcium. In addition, other vitamins, electrolytes
and trace minerals are included and also prebiotics and a probiotic to help
the birds to cope with the disease challenges when birds from different sources
are mixed together. Dextrose is included as an immediate excellent source of
glucose and energy to allow the bird maintain a more anabolic environment.
CALCIPLUS™ is ideal for racing pigeons to assist in preparation for racing and
to assist birds with recovery afterwards to replenish energy and calcium demands
of racing. Racing pigeons are often mixed with birds from other lofts which could
pose a biosecurity risk and so the use of CALCIPLUS™ with its added prebiotics
and probiotic can assist greatly with the bird coping with any disease challenges
they may have encountered whilst racing. Dextrose in CALCIPLUS™ is absorbed
very rapidly by the body and works to increase blood glycogen levels to promote
CALCIPLUS™ contains a field proven and effective probiotic with a blend of numerous species of live viable microbes designed to boost the favourable bacteria
in the gastrointestinal tract. These microbes are safe, non-toxic and residue free.
The microbes included are Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus delbrueckii
subspecies bulgaricus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Enterococcus faecium and Streptococcus salivarius subspecies thermophilus.
